Thank you for caring about cats!
In most instances where we have been contacted about cats stuck in trees they truly cannot get down on their own and animal control, fire and police departments are unable to help. We recommend contacting a tree climber, some may charge and others may not for their service but it is the quickest and safest way to help. This site has resources in each state or contact a local rescue who may have resources. We use Rob Gillies of Rescued by Rob noted on this website.
Most towns require you to call Animal Control or the non-emergency police number. From there, they can confirm what can be done but in most instances the cat needs to first be trapped or contained in a carrier. They will not do it for you. Some shelters or local rescues can lend traps or know of volunteers who can assist. reach out to your local rescue. It is CRITICAL to first have a plan in place on who will take the cat and when before doing any trapping unless you have a safe and appropriate holding space to contain the cat immediately.
Some towns may partner with organizations such as Monmouth County SPCA or Associated Humane Society to take in stray kittens. There are several variables on what they can or cannot do based on the town, age and friendliness of the kittens, whether there is a contract in place, and more. You can contact your local animal control, non-emergency police number, or local rescues for assistance. When rescuing kittens there are factors to consider before taking any action such as are they too small to eat on their own, is the mom cat around, are they currently safe, and more. Have a plan in place before doing anything and always aim to spay/neuter all cats found and not just the kittens otherwise a few kittens will turn into dozens pretty quickly!
Join our small cat-loving team of volunteers and make a difference in the lives of others. We have a variety of volunteer opportunities available. Trapping, transporting, fostering, colony feeding or fundraising in the Holmdel, Middletown, Keansburg area. Reach out today.
For those not aware, there is a lot of planning that goes into trapping, spaying/neutering, releasing, fostering etc. Before taking any action it’s important to first ensure there is a clinic spot available. Appointment slots are very limited. Here are just a few local clinic options to check. Some may only release a few appt options a week so checking first thing daily is best. When in doubt, contact your local rescue.
